The Lotus Eater

Lotus eaters are people who live an idle, comfortable life, like Wilson. They do not do any work and neither do they think or care very much abut anything else.

-quest for happiness
-fate determines our destiny.we can plan our life but we can't plan death.
- we are responsible for our life and mustn't depend on others.

-calm and matter-of-fact.
-tone shifts to sad when Wilson tries to kill himself
-atmosphere becomes bleak when Wilson dies later.

Point of View
-the narrator's point of view

Language & Style
-simple and straightforward.

Wilson decided to move to Capri to leave his boring routine in London. When he was in Capri, he led a 'routine' life like the one he had in London.

The hint of Wilson will dies when he is 60.

Wilson's way of life is compared to a wild animal's-He was like a wild animal.

The full moon=symbol of peace.

The story was set in the 20th century in Cari Island.

Thomas Wilson, The Narrator, The Landlady, The Narrator's friend.

Moral Values
-Life should be enjoyed and we must plan how to live our life meaningfully.
-Life is precious. We must take control of our lives.
-Happiness is not by leading an idle life. We must not be too complacent.

Writing: Articles & Reviews

Articles and reviews are examples of formal writing.

In SPM questions, you are given some notes, a map or some other pictorial stimulus; and you have to write an article or review.

Tips: Use formal English, do not use slang or colloquial.
Give all the details required; who?, when?, where?, why?
It is better to use the present tense for reviews and the past tense in articles.
Give your personal reaction/comments for reviews.

This Is How We Do it

How to Improve Your English Language

1) Use The Language

There are no shortcuts to learning a language. You have to totally immerse in it. Use English Language everywhere especially in school. If you are shy or unsure, begin with words and phrases, then sentences. You will be surprise how confident you are in speaking the language.

2) Be independent learners

Don't merely rely on me or your teachers to improve. I only see you few times a week, so you need to read more on your own and use the language.

3) Vocabulary notebook

Write down words and phrases that you learn each day. You can do this alphabetically or according to usage. Customize your notebook.Draw mind maps, picture, symbol, etc. Add new entries daily.

4) Invest in a good dictionary

Choose a dictionary that is portable and has examples of sentences and usage. Use them regularly, don't let them lying down collecting dust. My choice: Longman's Dictionary

5) Read more

You may start with reading about things that you are interested in. Read the newspaper daily to fill in your thirst for knowledge. For more serious reading, try reading letters to the Editor in the newspaper/magazines. You will learn to express your opinion, support your main ideas and give suggestions.

6) Have a journal / blog.

In order to improve, you have to write daily. Write at least 3 entries per week (by every Friday)

7) Speak in English

Practice makes perfect. Communicate with your parents, teachers and friends in English. Ask them to support your efforts so that you can have the confidence in the language.
